Simple Ways to Ditch the Diet Mentality

Atkins. South Beach. The Kind Diet. 21 Day Fix. Weight Watchers. Ketogenic. Paleolithic.

Name it. I’ve tried it.

It was a while before I realized that I was a disordered eater.

There is a difference between eating disorders and disordered eating. describes an eating disorder as “any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits (such as anorexia nervosa).”

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics defines disordered eating as “ a range of irregular eating behaviors that may or may not warrant a diagnosis of a specific eating disorder.”

Can you spot the difference? It was like I didn’t know how to eat. And how ridiculous is that really, when you think about it? We are born with the instinct to eat. Where do we fall off of the path? And why do we become so obsessed with EATING THE RIGHT THING? Can we break the cycle?

The answer is YES. I have done it.

First and foremost, it’s time to ditch this idea about “good foods” and “bad foods”. Food is just food. What makes it good or bad for us is how we eat it. If we are at the McDonald’s drive thru every day, then it’s bad for us. But it’s still just food. If we are eating mostly plants and using meat sparingly, then it’s good for us. Still just food. We have built a whole entire business around good and bad foods. We have made many people rich. But the reality is that unless we choose to abuse it, food is just food.

Unless it’s not. The food industry has created a myriad of “frankenfoods” to get us to buy into this idea. Notice how I called it an “industry”. We will come back to that. But let’s say you’re strolling down the aisle at your fave grocery store and you pick up a package of Fig Newtons. I mean, they’re MADE OF FIG! How could they be bad? Right?

Have you ever seen these ingredients before? If you handed this package to Grandma, would she even be able to pronounce these ingredients? NOPE.

I digress.

Get out of those center aisles, go find some FOOD, and break up with the idea that foods are good or bad.

Next, start living your life “as if”. And I don’t mean Cher from Clueless “as if”. I mean, if you want to be healthy, live as if you are healthy. If you want to be skinny, live as if you are skinny. Stop wishing, and hoping, and dieting, and then falling off the wagon. Let’s get a little bit NIKE and JUST DO IT.

Think about the people around you. Is anyone in your circle “the healthy one”? Look at what she does that has earned her that label. Does she get up early? Drink lots of water? Eat healthy, even at the party? Workout? Start playing shadow and do what she does.

Did you ever hear the saying, “Fake it ‘til you make it!”? Now is your chance to put that idea into practice.

Live as if your life is healthy, and soon enough, it will be.

And finally, STOP DIETING. Let’s talk about how diets throw your whole system out of whack, and why they don’t work.

I’ll start with your metabolism. Your metabolism is more than just that word that kept you skinny when you were in high school eating bags and bags of chips. Your metabolism is this crazy intricate and sensitive biological system in your body that makes ALL THE THINGS work. And you see, when you restrict calories, your body will start to drop weight and even function a little bit better metabolically. However, eventually, your body will think that you are starving, and it will go into survival mode — which leads to your body STORING sugar and protein as FAT for later use. Whoops. There goes the neighborhood - and your waist size!

What happens then? You give up. You get tired. You eat more because your body needs more. And now, your slower metabolism can’t SLUG through what you’re dumping in there, so you gain all of the weight back — and then some. Well shit.

The good news is that YOU CAN FIX THIS CYCLE. You can break it!!! You can beat the system — FINALLY!

This is another conversation for another time, but rest assured that if you just ditch this whole diet mentality and fix your relationship with food, you can lead a healthy life, free of excess weight and the disease that comes with it.
